ALBRIGHT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH'S JULY 2010 NEWSLETTER
During my first visit to Albright, as members of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) were giving me a tour of the church building, folks commented that Albright has an excellent Sunday School program, especially for adults. Bishop Schnase says that one of the marks of a growing, fruitful congregation is “intentional faith development.” I would put it this way: in a growing church, people are serious about growing in the faith. Let me ask you this question: how are you growing as a Christian? How is your study of scripture? In what ways are you becoming more Christ-like?
If you are not currently in a Sunday School class, I want to encourage you to prayerfully consider becoming a part of one. Our newest class is for young adults and is being taught by Tom and Dorleen Howard. As your pastor, I have been visiting various classes and am willing to teach on occasion also.
This fall, we will be offering several ways to grow in the faith. We will start a Disciple Bible Study which is a 34-week commitment to reading 80% of the Bible and meet weekly with a small group of other Christians for discussion. We are also discussing offering a study for couples on relationships. I am interested in leading a short-term study on United Methodism for those new to our church or folks just interested in learning more about the UM movement. If you have ideas or interests in special studies, please let me know!
As I write this, we are in the midst of Vacation Bible School. We had 61 children attend and that is great news!!! We will continue to explore how we can best work with our children and youth to make sure they “catch” the faith – through Sunday school, youth group, and special events like VBS. I want to say a word of thanks to Tommie Dehn who chaired our VBS team this year and all those who volunteered in any way to help with VBS. But I also want to thank those who work in our nursery and those who teach our children and youth on a weekly basis on Sunday mornings and in the various other ministries of our church. Your work is very important and Albright appreciates your time and effort.
Pastor Scott
Guest Preachers
Bob Knebel has been a regular guest with us at Albright for several months and will be preaching on Sunday, July 11. Our own David Miller will be preaching on Sunday, July 18. Pastor Scott will be on vacation July 5 – 18 and David Miller will be “on call” to provide pastoral care while Scott is away.
Biggest Loser – Albright Edition
We had our mid-way weigh-in on June 27th. Our top five Biggest Loser's so far are: Jane Koehler with 12% body weight lost, Dorleen Howard 10%, Ardeth Mason, 9%, Cindy Burns 7%, and Carol Mann 7%. Great job! Keep working hard! The final weigh-in will be Sunday, September 5th immediately following the worship service. Dr. Steve McLean will do the confidential weigh-in and Thelma Stewart will be available to do blood pressure checks. Someone will win $170.00! When you give financially to Albright, you change lives! Last week 61 different kids came through our church for Vacation Bible School. They heard stories from the Bible, sang songs, played games, made crafts, conducted science experiments, and ate together with their parents, grandparents, guardians, church members, and many of our youth, These kids also gave $50 towards the Red Bird mission school in Kentucky as well as several toys and packages of socks and underwear for Child Share here in Ponca. We were planting seeds of faith into the lives of these kids.
Your giving keeps the doors of our church open so that some of our older members can gather for games with other United Methodists from Ponca during the week. Your giving helps send four of our youth to church camp at Camp Egan near Tahlequah. Your giving makes it possible for us to have a beautiful space to gather and worship God on a weekly basis.
Thank You for your giving.
But your giving also helps all kinds of people across Oklahoma and around the world. Connectional Giving enables United Methodists to do together what no church, district or annual (regional) conference could do alone. · Together, with other United Methodists, we are reaching college students for Christ on Oklahoma's college campuses. · Together, with other United Methodists, we are reaching people in prisons across Oklahoma as well as those recently released from prison. · Together, with other United Methodists, we have built a great university in Africa and are helping to change the face of the African continent. All of this—and so much more—is possible because when we joined The United Methodist Church, we promised faithfully to participate in its ministries through our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. By paying our apportionments (connectional giving) at 100 percent we become a part of something big and accomplish wonderful things in Jesus’ name! We are a little behind in our connectional giving for 2010, but we expect to pay 100% this year! When you give through your local church, your gifts expands Albright's ministry not only locally, but globally as well. Pictorial Directory
Put on your best smile and be ready to use it…..we will be creating a new pictorial directory for Albright United Methodist Church. There is no charge to get a free 8 X 10 and a free directory. Picture times will be July 13, 14, 30, and 31. Call the office (580)765-6432, if you haven't signed up yet. Mark your calendars and get that smile in place!
If you have questions, you may contact David Miller, Pat Lutz or the church office. If you are a shut-in, we hope to send out our roving camera man to take your picture so it can be included in our new directory!
The office will be closed July 5th in observance of Independence Day.
The Brown Bag Bible Study Group is beginning a study on the book of Revelation. Bring your lunch and join us every Friday at noon.
Strength for Service - On Sunday, July 4, we will have the opportunity to thank our military troops by collecting a special "Strength for Service" offering. "Strength for Service" is a daily devotional book that is specifically written for those in the service of others. Your gift will help send these much needed books to our military men and women overseas who protect our freedom daily. More information is available at www.strengthforservice.org

These helped me tremendously. My flat looks really nice thanks to the church's help. Ladies will be very impressed when they visit my place. There were also many things I needed (toothbrush, shower curtain, toilet paper) that I didn't have and the money was very helpful.I enjoyed playing for the church because it is where my grandma attended before she died. She no longer attended after she died and I wasn't able to meet her. I hope she could see me playing and helping people be closer to Jesus at her church.I live in McKinney. There are a lot of nice ladies around here in Dallas. Even people that go to Wal-Mart are attractive here. Feel free to visit if you come down to Dallas and you will see what I mean.I hope everyone has a good summer and the choir doesn't sound too bad without me. Sincerely, Jason Stillwell

READERS: Please check the “Preaching Schedule” in the NewsNotes, which goes out the first of every month. Your reading will be the first scripture listed for that Sunday. In the event the NewsNotes do not reach those of you reading the first Sunday of the month, call Chera for your reading. The schedule is also posted on the bulletin board by the office.
It is preferred that you read from the PEW Bible (New Revised Standard Version) or the large print Bible on the lectern. This way, the congregation can follow you in reading the same thing. If you are going to be gone, please trade with someone else on the list and let Chera know so she can put it in the Sunday bulletin. If an emergency or last minute change has to be made, let Donna or the office know and we will find a reader. If, for some reason, you no longer wish to be a reader, Let me know and we will find someone else. Some of you may be on here for the first time, if you would rather not read, Let Donna know. Thanks.
